A peignoir is a set with a nightgown and matching robe, typically in sheer, sexy fabrics with lace trim. It’s intended to be worn as a high-femme sexy garment but the history of them was anything but.
Peignoir means “to comb the hair” and was a piece of fabric placed over your shoulders, around your neck, and cascading down over your clothes to protect them while your hair was brushed out (or in men’s cases, your wig powdered and adjusted on your head). They were meant to protect your clothes and over time became more robe-like. As the specific hair upkeep for men and women changed, so did the need to “protect” clothing and instead became a luxurious addition to your nighttime wear.
